چکیده

Editor's Note A Simple Approach to Reducing Inappropriate Use of Central Venous Catheters Central venous catheters are commonly used in hospitalized patients. Many are not indicated, evidence of benefit is scant, andall putpatients at risk for thrombosis and infection. In this issue, McDonald and Lee1 describe a simple intervention— making inpatient teams aware that a patient has a central venous catheter and the probable indication for the catheter— that appears to have resulted in a major reduction in the prevalence of inappropriate use of central venous catheters. While we applaud this effort, additional evidence is needed, as this intervention took place at 1 hospital and there was no concurrent control group. But we hope the study will stimulate additional research, preferably randomized clinical trials, to document the efficacy of interventions to reduce theuse of inappropriate central venous catheters.

Antibiotic prescribing for Canadian preschool children: evidence of overprescribing for viral respiratory infections.

Antibiotic resistance is associated with prior receipt of antibiotics. An analysis of linked computerized databases for physician visits and antibiotic prescriptions was used to examine antibiotic prescribing for different respiratory infections in preschool children in Canada. In 1995, 64% of 61,165 children aged <5 years made 140,892 visits (mean, 3.6 visits per child) for respiratory infecti...

Trends in antibiotic prescribing for acute respiratory infection in veterans with spinal cord injury and disorder.

OBJECTIVES Most acute respiratory infections (ARIs) are viral and do not warrant antibiotic therapy. Studies to date have not examined trends in antibiotic use in ARIs in populations with disabilities, thus we assessed antibiotic prescribing for veterans with spinal cord injury and disorder (SCI and D) with outpatient ARI visits. PATIENTS AND METHODS Retrospective study using Department of Ve...

Office-related antibiotic prescribing for persons aged ≤ 14 years--United States, 1993-1994 to 2007-2008.

In 2003, the Institute of Medicine identified antibiotic resistance as a key microbial threat to health in the United States and recommended promoting appropriate antibiotic use as an important strategy to address this threat. Antibiotic use contributes to development of antibiotic resistance on both the individual and country level. To examine trends in pediatric antibiotic prescribing in phys...
